Here are 4 steps for setting up a trap hive

  1. Location, location, location: Choose a spot that is likely to attract swarming bees. Areas protected from strong winds and the main heat of the day make good locations. The trap should also be at least 2m (6ft) off the ground, facing to catch the morning sun.
  2. Add a lure to the trap to attract bees. Bees are attracted to the scent of beeswax and propolis. Melt and spread the wax or propolis inside the hive and around the entrances.
  3. Next, secure the trap to the chosen location using ropes or straps, or by nailing it to a tree or other structure. You don’t want it to fall or be blown off in a strong wind.
  4. Check the trap regularly for signs of bee activity. Bees may take several days or even weeks to find the trap, so be patient. Once you’ve captured a swarm, transfer them to a permanent hive and begin the process of establishing a new colony.

Remember that setting up a trap box is just one part of beekeeping, and it requires ongoing attention and care to maintain healthy and productive hives. Proper hive management, disease prevention, and bee nutrition are all important factors in successful beekeeping.

In conclusion, setting up a trap box requires careful consideration of location, securing the trap, adding a lure, and checking it regularly for activity. With patience and persistence, capturing a swarm can be a rewarding experience for beekeepers of all levels.
