6 Important Considerations Before Keeping Bees In The Yard

Keeping bees in the yard can be a rewarding experience. It allows you to observe and care for the bees on a regular basis. However, there are certain precautions you should take to ensure that the bees and your household are safe and comfortable.

Here’s our list of 6 things to consider before keeping bees in the yard:

  1. Municipal bylaws. Depending on where you live you may have to comply with certain municipal bylaws. You can contact your local municipality, or beekeeping association to get this information for your area.
  2. Consider the proximity of the hive. When keeping bees close to the house, it is important to consider the proximity of the hive to the house. The hive should be placed in a location that is at least 3m (10ft) away from any entrances to the house, such as doors or windows. This will help to prevent bees from accidentally flying into the house and potentially causing harm. You can also orientate the entrance of the hive away from the house.
  3. Surrounding area. Place your bees away from garden features that require regular maintenance. Bees become agitated by tannins released by plants that are being pruned, especially grass being mowed. Also consider what’s happening on the other side of your border fence. If the hive is near a border shared with the neighbour, their garden activities will affect the bees.
  4. Provide a water source. Bees require a source of water, particularly during hot weather. You can provide a water source for the bees by placing a shallow dish of water near the hive. This will help to prevent the bees from searching for water sources elsewhere like your pool. You can also half submerge stones or marbles in the water to provide the bees with an escape should they fall in.
  5. Pesticides. Avoid using pesticides or other chemicals that could harm the bees. Implement natural, organic gardening practises and only use organic pesticides as a last resort. Preferably after dark when the bees are not active.
  6. Communicate with your neighbours. It is important to let your neighbours know that you are keeping bees. Allow them a chance to voice any objections or ask questions they may have. You may also want to provide them with some honey as a gesture of goodwill.
  7. Use the correct equipment. When working with your bees, make sure to use the right equipment. This will make your work easier and minimise the impact on the bees. You can check our our guide for the essential tools every beekeeper needs.
