My 3 Favourite Beekeepers To Follow
If you’ve spent any amount of time on the internet, you know that it’s a smorgasbord of information with no clear direction as what is valuable and what is a waste of time.
Even though I can’t help you navigate all of it, I can give you some direction when it comes to beekeeping.
Here are 3 beekeepers whose channels/pages I often consult when I’m looking for information.
#1 Daniel Bridger (South Africa)
First up we have Daniel Bridger. He is a beekeeper in South Africa. Although he does not have a large channel or massive following yet, he does share immensely valuable information. His focus is mainly on queen rearing and breeding, but there is also a fantastic video about Capensis infestation and how to treat it. (Side bar: A. mellifera capensis is a bee that invades the A. mellifera scuttelata hives in South Africa and leads to their demise)
Why I follow him: He posts content relevant to South Africa
Why I think you should follow him: If you’re in South Africa you may also find him relevant. If you’re from abroad, it may be useful to get a South African opinion, especially if you want to learn about queen rearing and breeding.
You can check out his YouTube channel here.
#2 The Bush Bee Man (Australia)
Probably the most entertaining beekeeper out there! In some of his videos he comes across as a bit of a cluts, but he is so brilliant and funny to watch. He doesn’t mess around with fluff and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. I just love watching him.
He covers a range of topics suitable for beginners and more advanced beekeepers. I highly recommend you have a look if you want a not-so-serious-but-still-valid education in beekeeping.
Why I follow him: He is hilarious and truly entertaining. His content is incredibly helpful, and because he is in Australia, his climate conditions are similar to ours, so a lot of the practices are relevant to us.
Why I think you should follow him: For sheer entertainment value, and a fun learning experience.
#3 Canadian Beekeepers Blog (Canada)
Up next we have my absolute go-to for more advanced beekeeping information. Ian Steppler is the creator of A Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog and he is super helpful and readily shares his process. His style is a lot more serious, but still binge-worthy.
Ian does go into a lot of detail regarding more advanced aspects of beekeeping and even explains progressing from a hobbyist to a more commercial scale.
If you want to see what is possible with beekeeping (on a large scale and in harsh winter weather conditions) go check him out! His setup is truly inspiring. When I grow up I want to be a beekeeper like Ian!
Why I follow him: For advice on advanced beekeeping practices and seeing what is possible. As a mentor for commercial-level beekeeping
Why I think you should follow him: To increase your skillset and level up your beekeeping.
You can find him on Youtube or his website.
I see he recently also added the option of joining his channel as a paying customer where he offers additional benefits to those who wish to join. As of yet, I have not subscribed, since I’ve not felt the need, but I probably will as our business grows to a larger commercial level.
Looking For More?
If these 3 don’t float your boat, you will find a helluva lot more just by entering any beekeeping-related phrase into YouTube or your search engine. There are literally hundreds across the world that share their experience.
These are my preferred three as I find them the most relevant and helpful.
Please comment below and share your thoughts on these suggestions, and also share your favourite beekeepers to follow.
Until next time!
